Based on Louisa May Alcott’s cherished novel, Little Women: The Broadway Musical brings to life the timeless story of the March sisters - Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy - as they navigate love, loss, and the pursuit of their dreams during the American Civil War.

At the heart of the musical is Jo March, an ambitious and fiercely independent young woman determined to find her place in the world as a writer. Alongside her sisters, Jo discovers the meaning of family, resilience, and the importance of following one’s heart. With a sweeping score filled with joy, humour, and poignancy, this musical captures both the intimacy of home and the grandeur of adventure.

Little Women is a heartfelt reminder of the power of imagination, the bonds that shape us, and the courage it takes to stay true to yourself.

Little Women is a story that has always sat close to my heart. First published in 1868, its words and characters have survived the test of time — older than the history of white Australia — and continue to resonate with new generations across cultures and contexts. At its core, it speaks to resilience, ambition, love, and the courage to remain true to yourself — themes that hold as much weight today as they did over 150 years ago. Jo March, in particular, embodies a spirit of independence and determination that I see reflected in so many of the people around me — artists, dreamers, and changemakers who continue to fight for their voice to be heard.

When approaching this production, my vision was not only to honour Louisa May Alcott’s world but to invite our cast to step into it with authenticity. These characters are not relics of the past — they are people we recognise in our own lives: sisters, friends, mentors, rivals, and companions. By grounding their stories in honesty, we were able to find humour, vulnerability, and humanity in every scene.

From the very beginning, I knew this show had to feel like a celebration of community. The March sisters — with all their differences, flaws, and dreams — remind us that family is not perfect, but it is precious. In the rehearsal room, we mirrored this spirit: building a space filled with collaboration, laughter, challenge, and care. Every staging choice and every piece of choreography was designed not only to tell Jo’s story but to amplify the voices of the entire ensemble, ensuring each character contributes meaningfully to the heart of the story. Dance and movement became tools for storytelling, expressing what words sometimes cannot — Jo’s restless energy, Amy’s sharp determination, Beth’s gentle grace, and Meg’s quiet yearning for balance.

Directing and choreographing this piece has been an incredible privilege. To watch our performers grow into these roles, to see them support and inspire each other, and to discover new truths together in such a beloved tale has been a reminder of why I love theatre. It is not just about performance, but about connection — the way it brings people together to share something bigger than themselves.

This production also reflects the heart of CODA. Our company was founded on the belief that theatre should be a space of inclusivity, collaboration, and empowerment, where every voice matters and every individual is valued. Little Women has allowed us to embody these values fully: telling a story that honours the past while resonating with the present, and giving our community of artists the chance to shine both individually and collectively.

Finally, I want to extend my deepest thanks. To my family — Kathryn, Rocco, Izzy, Aston, and my partner Jacob — thank you for your unwavering love and support, without which none of this would be possible. To my creative team — Finn, Grant, Zoe, Mel, Sam, Rob, Matilda, Jay, Marcy, & Lucy — your artistry and dedication have shaped this production into something truly special. To Jordan, who has breathed life into Jo with such passion and truth, and to our entire cast, who have poured their hearts into every moment — thank you. You are the reason this story feels alive.

My hope is that our Little Women leaves you feeling the way Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy leave me: braver, more inspired, and more grateful for the people who walk alongside us in life. May their story remind you that dreams are worth chasing, love is worth holding onto, and community is worth cherishing.
